Unified Architecture

The proposed unified architecture is shown in the figure. It is "unified" in that data collected from the patient and from other sources via the Gateway is time synchronized and stored in a database with known labels. The data can then be used by a series of component "plug-ins" developed by third-parties to aid the clinician in patient management. The Knowledge Supervisor interprets the various plug-in components and carries out the task they specify. It builds on current standards where possible and provides a valuable use case for standards that are currently being developed. Similar to DICOM the standard would be open but the individual components would largely be commercial medical devices allowing a hospital to implement the information system with little or no customization, if desired.
